Conservative vs Liberal outlets
By TJ Gosse

For this assignment, I used Fox News as a “conservative” outlet and Good Morning America Yahoo online as a “liberal” news outlet. I came to this conclusion after reading this chart provided by the Washington post. It ranks popular news channels on a scale of liberal to conservative.

There were many differences that I noticed in both source. The Fox news video was a severe critique of O’Malley’s past and future. Although it was harsh, there was a lot of truth in what he was saying. Howard Kurtz rips him up pretty good and raises a lot of questions that have yet to be answered. One question that they address is why O’Malley never says anything negative about Hillary. The news piece claims that O’Malley is sticking to basic “crowd pleasing lines”. The reporter goes on to say that O’Malley has taken a “mild jab” at Hillary at best.  How is he able to be an effective competitor? They are still bringing O’Malley’s contention into question. They want to know whether or not he is going to actually make a run since Elizabeth Warren and other big names have dropped out. They also open the options to him maybe just raising his status in order to get a chance at the vice president slot. In addition, this reporter also says O’Malley is “not the world’s most scintillating speaker” and a “policy guy” which makes it tough to connect with voters. The source kind of mentions a conspiracy because the Democratic Party wants a race yet no one is able to make a serious run against Clinton according to this Fox source: “O’Malley is it!” Overall, most conservative sources are still focused on Hillary. The video is on the link below:

On the other hand, liberal sources like the Good Morning America yahoo page portrayed O’Malley as a “hurdle for Clinton”. Unlike the conservative news outlet, this was not a critique. It shined a much more positive light on his campaign. In this specific clip, they used footage from the George Stephanopoulos interview that we also looked at in class. They emphasized the statement where he was quoted saying that the presidency is not something that can just be passed between families. They also tend to talk about all the progress that he has had including employment, same-sex marriage laws, education, the list goes on and on in this news story. I thought this was more effective because it let the interview speak for itself by primarily stating the facts instead of speculation or criticism. Someone at GMA must really like O’Malley because they talk about him getting standing ovations in Iowa although the polls showed that he actually did not do that well. Conservative sources would have looked at Iowa as a loss for O’Malley thus far. This source also claims that Elizabeth warren is on the sidelines. O’Malley says they can “bring the American dream back”. Of course, they also talk about his Irish folk rock band and  how he was the inspiration behind the mayor from The Wire. Here is the link:

  1. Given the fact that O'Malley hasn't made as big of a jump as Clinton and Warren have in the public eye, do you think that he will be able to rise up his popularity and have a chance at success in the 2016 elections?
